A Blazer
When it comes to wardrobe essentials for the modern woman, it’s important that you have clothing that can be worn over and over again in different situations. Nothing beats a blazer. A blazer with built in structure like a good cut of fabric or darting will make a huge difference in your wardrobe, and can be dressed up or down to meet your needs.
For the most versatility, opt for grey, black, or navy. (These colors have been scientifically proven to be the best colors to wear during an interview!) Additionally, these colors will give you the widest range and ability to wear the blazer with different outfits.
I talk about the third piece rule a lot, and this is the perfect place to put it into action. A structured and well fitted blazer automatically pulls an outfit together and makes it feel more formal. If you’re trying to keep your business casual attire professional, wearing a jacket will always help.
Catch-all blouse
When I say a “catch-all blouse” I mean a simple blouse that you can wear on its own, under a blazer, or paired with nearly any kid of bottoms. This is potentially one of the most important and versatile wardrobe essentials for the modern woman. This could be a neutral colored button down shirt or a white blouse. This is a catch all piece that can be dressed down with jeans, worn under a suit or blazer, or can be worn in just about any other situation you can think of.
Another great thing about a white shirt is that it can be bleached if something spills on it. I’ve gotten red wine out of a white shirt with bleach, so a white shirt is a great option for events.
Jeans that fit you perfectly
Nothing beats perfectly fitted jeans. You can wear them on the weekend or dress them up in a business casual or smart casual office environment. Find a brand and style that works for your body. Flats are great, but it is absolutely necessary to own at least one pair of comfortable heels that you can wear all day long. Comfortable heels become harder and harder to find as you get older, so don’t think about it and snag a pair when you find them. I love wearing heels, but it’s important that they are comfortable to wear so that they are functional. If your feet hurt all day, it will likely take away from your productivity.
