What to Wear for a Labor Day BBQ or Party

Can you believe it? It may be 100 degrees out, (thank you Southern California) but Labor Day marks unofficial the end of summer and the transition into fall. That being said, the long weekend is often packed with all sorts of summer events, so I’m sharing what to wear for a Labor Day BBQ or party!

Ask about the dress code

This might sound silly when you think about a BBQ, but ask the host about the dress code to get a better idea of what others will be wearing. This is especially important for a pool or beach party because when it comes down to it, everyone knows that there are pool parties where people actually swim, and there are “pool parties” where people get dressed up and eat pretty food and drink cocktails. You’ll want to make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into before showing up. Stressed about dress codes? Check out my complete guide here!

Make sure you’re comfortable

One of the fastest and easiest ways to ruin your time celebrating at a party is being uncomfortable in your clothing. While you want to make sure you look good, feeling good in what you’re wearing is equally important. Whatever it is that makes you feel good and flatters your body, dissect the different components and take note of them so that you can figure out the formula of how to build an outfit that makes you feel most comfortable.

Embrace the maxi dress or skirt

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I love a good maxi dress or skirt. And yes, I’m five feet tall so I usually have to get them shortened to fit, but they are really versatile and perfect when you’re trying to figure out what to wear for a Labor Day BBQ or party. One of the reasons I love maxi options so much is because you get the ease and comfort of a skirt/dress without having to worry about being to revealing when you sit. I’m always thinking about how I’m sitting and if I’m showing too much skin when I’m in a shorter skirt or dress, but with maxi dresses and skirts there’s no worry! You can also dress them up or down, and can easily switch up an outfit for various occasions which makes it a simple solution for multiple events.

Have fun with hats

It’s Labor Day and this weekend looks like it’s going to be hot! Hats are a great way to add interest to your outfit during summer because they keep the sun off your face. (As a side note, they easily cover up a bad hair day!) There are so many different styles you can embrace. I love all kinds of hats, but if you’re new to the hat game, try on different styles until you figure out what you like. I’m a big fan of a good straw hat for summer because it adds shade but is still light weight. Plus, it adds a fun island vibe to any outfit!

Hats come in all different shapes and sizes, and the key to embracing them is finding the style that works best for you. Go on a hat hunt and try on different options. If you search for it, you’ll almost surely be able to find a style that you love.

________

When you’re trying to figure out what to wear for a Labor Day BBQ or party, remember that this long weekend is about enjoying the end of summer and having fun. Make sure you know what the vibe and dress code is before showing up, ensure that you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing, and if you’re outside, think about wearing a hat to add interest and keep the harmful sun off your face.

Happy Labor Day!

    • Hi Pammy, I’d follow the same guidelines as listed in the post! BBQs are pretty laid back, so you shouldn’t have to worry too much about it being “corporate” unless your company has strict dress code policies. As a rule of thumb, I’d rather be a bit overdressed than under. Hope this helps!
