Dressing well doesn’t equate to spending a lot of money on clothing. It’s all about finding products that work for you and investing in a few key pieces to pair with lower budget items. Some things are worth investing in, while others are best bought at a lower price. Here are three items to spend and save on this season.
Spend: Clothing that fits you perfectly
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, a big part of having great style is finding clothing that fits you properly to highlight and flatter your figure. If you find something that fits you like it was made for you, it’s worth spending the money on. If it’s something that looks amazing on you and makes you feel confident, the confidence alone is worth the money! When it comes to what to spend and save on this season (or any season) clothing that fits you well is always a category to spend on.
Spend: Leather goods (i.e. belts and classic shoes)
Leather goods such as shoes, belts, and bags are always worth spending a little more on because real leather will last longer and often looks better with age. As far as shoes go, leather shoes are often more comfortable too because they stretch and mold to your foot. Leather is literally a piece of skin which is why it’s much more comfortable than a synthetic.
Note that there are some high quality synthetic leather goods out there and these products are worth investing in as well. Whether it’s genuine or vegan leather, high quality is worth investing in for this category.
Note that you can still find really good deals on leather goods at places like Nordstrom Rack. You can often find many real leather products for a fraction of the price, however real leather goods will almost always be more expensive than the fake stuff.
Spend: Sunglasses
Sunglasses are a very underrated and important product. You don’t necessarily have to spend hundreds of dollars on sunglasses, but it is worth investing in sunglasses that have a good amount of eye protection. We often think of sunglasses as a style accessory, however eye protection is very important.
Look for sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays. Dark lenses don’t automatically mean more protection. As long as the lenses note that they block 100% of UV rays, color doesn’t actually matter. Here are my favorite sunglasses that protect, fit well, and are super lightweight!
Save: Straw
Straw accessories including hats and bags are super trendy right now. While they look good, let’s be honest and acknowledge that straw is straw and it’s not going to be super sturdy no matter how much you pay for it. There are a lot of great straw items out there that don’t cost an arm and a leg. Straw accessories are definitely within a category that you don’t need to spend on.
Here’s my favorite straw hat (pictured) and here are some really cute straw bags: (here) and (here)
Save: Neon
I love a good pop of neon, but neon clothing and/or accessories are trendy, not timeless. Plus, they work well during spring and summer, but are very difficult to wear during the cooler months. If you want to wear neon, go for it, but definitely don’t spend on it.
Here is one of my favorite lime green crop tops, and you really can’t beat the price from Zara.
Save: Trendy accessories
As a general rule of thumb accessories that are trendy like animal print and clear plastic purses aren’t things that are worth spending a ton of money on. If you want to try them out, do it, however there are likely a lot of options available that don’t cost as much money. If you can’t see yourself using or wearing something for at least a few years, it’s not worth investing in.
____________
Ultimately, building a wardrobe is about curating items that make you feel good. These are simply guidelines for what to spend and save on this season. If something makes you happy and confident, and if you think you’ll get a lot of use out of it, it’s probably worth investing in.
