The Secret to Wearing an Oversized Blazer

Usually I’m all about a great fitted jacket, but sometimes, I love wearing an oversized blazer to mix things up. The secret to wearing an oversized blazer is all about what you pair it with. My rule of thumb is to pick one oversized or flowy piece per outfit.

In this case I chose the blazer to be my one loose item, but if you’re wearing a fitted blazer, think about pairing it with a loose dress or wide leg pants and a fitted top. Similarly, you may want to choose a fitted jacket and pencil skirt to pair with a looser top. If you pick more than once piece to be loose or oversized, it is easy to appear frumpy, and if every item of your outfit is fitted, it can air on the edge of inappropriate for work. This is not to say you shouldn’t wear fitted outfits, but just be conscious of what you are wearing and how it appears to others.

Okay, back to the secret to wearing a fitted blazer: Pair it with fitted wardrobe items! In this case, I chose a fitted black dress, but straight leg pants and a fitted blouse are great options too. The key is to make the blazer stand out, and flatter your body by pairing it with clean, fitted lines. You’ll notice in the picture that I wore a dress just above knee length, and the fitted skirt of it creates a long, lean silhouette coming out of the slightly boxy jacket. By having a slightly longer and fitted skirt which is longer than the hem of the jacket, it gives the illusion of slimmer body than the large cut of the jacket. If you were to wear a loose shift dress with this jacket, the lines and shape created would make you appear overall bigger, which is never a good thing.

The Secret to Wearing an Oversized Blazer

When wearing an oversized blazer, I also try to keep all of the other items I wear with it relatively simple, and spice up the outfit with some jewelry or a great bag. With an oversized piece as the main focal point of an outfit, it is easy to have too much going on, so keep the clothing and styles simple, adding flare with accessories.
