Everyone has their own definition of a perfect little black dress, but for me, I must have four major requirements:
- It must fit me perfectly, and if it doesn’t I will get it tailored to do so
- It must be comfortable to wear for hours on end
- It must be able to take me from work to a night out
- It must make me feel great. If I don’t feel great in it, what’s the point?
Starting off, I believe that everything in your wardrobe should fit you perfectly; that is part of what makes your wardrobe truly yours. But In this case, my perfect little black dress must fit my body to the T. If there are a few minor details that need adjusting, your tailor will be your best friend. A dress that fits well should look great on its own, but also look great worn with other items, such as a blazer, etc.
An essential part of any piece I purchase is that it can be multi-functional. A big part of the reason why I purchased this dress in particular is because I can wear it stand alone, with a blazer, or under a button down blouse where it functions as a skirt, or even with a cool vest. My goal was to get something very utilitarian. I actually saw this dress in green, and though I loved the look of it, when I sat down to think, I realized that I wouldn’t get nearly as much use out of it. NOTE: If you’re someone who would wear an emerald green dress a lot, by all means, buy the dress, but thinking about my own personal style and taste, it just wasn’t realistic.
On that same note, my perfect little black dress must be comfortable enough for me to wear to work, and keep on to wear out for drinks and/or a cocktail party after. (Not that this happens a lot, because quite frankly, I put on sweats or go for a spin class after work, but hey, it could happen!) My point is that I want to be comfortable wherever I am, whether that is sitting at my desk, or at a holiday party, or wherever. Having a dress that is physically comfortable, as well as mentally, meaning that I am comfortable wearing it almost anywhere is extremely important.
Lastly, I want to feel great. Part of having confidence and drive to go out into the world is feeling great about yourself. Motivation has to start somewhere, and when you are in a good place with yourself and how you look, this translates to other aspects of your life. People can see confidence, and almost always respond to it positively. No matter what age or walk of life you’re in, having one black dress that hits all of these factors will be one of your biggest tools.
