When you’re on a budget, it’s easy to fall into the trap of purchasing clothing that is mass manufactured and low quality. The problem with this is that a) you’ll end up spending more in the long run because the materials won’t last long, and b) you’re probably purchasing something that was made utilizing little to no labor laws. What it means to invest in a responsible brand is that you’re going to get a higher quality product, and you’re going to be purchasing clothing that was made in conjunction with labor and wage laws.
Think about it this way: You may be on a tight budget, but purchasing low priced/mass produced clothing fuels companies to keep their costs and retail prices low. This puts workers who make the clothing on even lower budgets, and creates a hard to break cycle. Saving up to invest in ethically produced pieces will give you the opportunity to get more use out of your clothing and support responsible sourcing. The key to investing in responsible brands is to find some that you really like and feel strongly about.
One of my favorite brands is Splendid. I originally started buying their clothing around eight years ago because I loved all of the super soft materials and cute styles, (Note the adorable dress in the picture above**) but I’ve continued to purchase their clothing because it lasts forever and is often made in the USA. They maintain corporate responsibility and work with various sustainability efforts locally and nationally.
Another brand that I’ve become a huge fan of is Tory Burch. The simple and classic pieces are beautiful, ethically produced, and the brand gives back to young entrepreneurs through the Tory Burch Foundation, which is something very close to my heart.
What it means to invest in a responsible brand is that you can empower brands to make all clothing more sustainably and ethically produced. This movement enables our workers to get the pay and benefits they deserve, and ensures that you’re purchasing clothes that are worth the money you pay for them. Buying inexpensive items sounds great, but when you take a closer look at it, purchasing those items does more harm than good. It can be a hard habit to get used to, but in the long run you’ll notice the difference in your closet. Take some time to find brands that you feel aligned with and show them some loyalty. There are a lot of fabulous and ethical brands out there, but you have to understand that you pay for responsible sourcing and high quality.
** I had to show you all a close up of the pattern on my dress, because I’m kind of obsessed with it! The cutest glasses print around, AND so soft and comfy! Can’t get better than that!!
