How to Build a Wardrobe that Aligns with Your Personal Brand

Building a wardrobe that is functional and reflects your personality can seem overwhelming, so I wanted to share a few tips to guide you on how to build a wardrobe that aligns with your personal brand.

Start by looking at your daily routine

If you want to build a wardrobe that aligns with your personal brand, the first step to really assess your daily routine and to figure out how and where most of your time is spent.

This will give a good indication of what kind of clothing you’ll need and what kind of clothing best suits your lifestyle.

For example, if you work in a job where you’re constantly walking around and moving, you’re probably going to want to wear practical shoes. Note that practical shoes don’t automatically mean old people shoes, however investing in some footwear with support will help you maintain your body in the long run. Trust me, I worked in retail and I did not wear comfortable shoes, and my body and back paid for it.

Next, take a look at the people around you

Note that you should not cater your wardrobe to other people and making them happy, however you do need to be mindful of dress codes and what kind of environment you’re in on a daily basis.

If you work in an office that requires formal business attire (i.e. suits, slacks, blazers, etc.) you probably don’t want to stock up on jeans and North Face jackets. The same idea goes in reverse. If you work in a tech office where everyone wears jeans and a fleece jacket, you probably don’t need five different suits or a multitude of ties in your closet.

When you’re trying to build a wardrobe that aligns with your personal brand, it all comes down to two main things: the image you want to give off and your lifestyle. It’s essential that your wardrobe is functional so that it doesn’t hinder your ability to live your life and conduct your daily routine. Your wardrobe should improve your appearance and your confidence without diminishing your lifestyle or functionality.

Pay attention to color

When you’re trying to build a wardrobe that aligns with your personal brand, pay attention to color. This doesn’t necessarily mean colors that are part of your brand colors (if you have a business) but colors that make you feel good when you wear them.

My wardrobe strongly aligns with my brand colors of black and white because I built a brand around what I love, however when you’re trying working to build a wardrobe that aligns with your personal brand, think about any colors that  make you feel confident.

These questions might give you a better idea of what that means:

  • Do you like wearing blue or green because it brings out your eyes? (side note: purple will bring out your eye color if your eyes are brown or hazel)
  • Do you prefer a more neutral color palate?
  • Do you love bright colors because they brighten your mood?

It’s important to integrate whatever colors make you feel confident into your wardrobe. This doesn’t have to be on a large scale. If you love blue you shouldn’t have an all blue wardrobe, however maybe you invest in a well-crafted blue bag, or add blue accents into your outfit with socks, a scarf, or a shirt.

The point of building a wardrobe that is reflective of your style is to help you feel confident in the image that you’re putting off into the world. If you incorporate colors that make you feel confident and powerful, it will help you put your best foot forward.

______________

The goal of building a wardrobe that aligns with your personal brand is to accumulate clothing that flatters your body, heightens your confidence, and shows people a bit of your personality.
