Are you someone that prefers to be in pants, or would you always rather be in a dress or skirt? Do button down blouses work for you, or do you struggle with finding options for your body type? Struggling with workwear? Figure out the formula for your perfect office outfit by figuring out what kind of clothing you feel best in.

What do you feel best in?

I can say that when it comes to work, (and honestly I don’t dress much different even when I’m not working) I feel my best when I’m in a blazer, simple blouse, and skinny jeans. If you look at my clothing and what I write about, you’ll notice that I’m often wearing some version of this outfit. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good dress or skirt, especially when it’s warm out, however when I need to be running around to get stuff done, I don’t want to be worrying about my skirt riding up or anything like that.

Someone else might feel their best in a skirt and button down blouse. Whatever it is that makes you feel good and flatters your body, dissect the different components and take note of them.

Figure out your formula:

Using myself as an example, my formula would be structured blazer + flowy blouse + skinny pants [or] pencil skirt. Your formula might be button down blouse + pencil skirt, or it might be wide leg trousers + simple T shirt + cardigan.

Whatever it is you wear most and feel best in, that is the formula you want to work with. Why do you want a formula? Because if you have a formula to fall back on, you’ll never find yourself without an outfit in the morning.

Let me explain: if you know the key pieces that you often wear, you can purchase items within that category and organize your closet so it is a simple mix and match process that never fails. Keep reading to get the details!

Putting your formula to use:

Again, using myself as an example, my formula is structured blazer + flowy blouse + skinny pants [or] pencil skirt.

When I go shopping, I’m going to look for pieces that fit within some component of my formula so I know that I will in fact wear what I buy. While you can absolutely purchase other items, when you’re shopping for workwear or clothing that you want to be sure you’ll wear a lot, using your personal formula as a guideline is a great idea.

The next step is organizing your closet. Group all of your clothes for each component together, so you can easily go down the line and pick an office outfit in the morning. My closet has skinny pants folded on a shelf, my blazers hung first, then all of my blouses. That way I know I can grab a pair of pants, a blazer, and a top for an easy morning routine. By grouping your formula items together, you’ll easily be able to create an outfit with all the components you feel great in, and ensure that you have a polished and put together look.
