It sounds weird, but I try to keep a running list of clothing/accessory items that I really want or need in my wardrobe. It’s just like a grocery shopping list. White t-shirt have a stain on it? Put it on the list. Just really wanting to try out a boyfriend jean? That goes on there too.
It might sound like this feeds shopping addictions, however it can actually help you save money in the long run and keep your shopping in check. I try to go shopping for items I feel I’ll use/need or have been eyeing for a long time instead of simply going shopping to go shopping. If I do end up finding a lot of great items, I refer back to my list.
Shopping with a purpose is always the best option, but if you do find yourself shopping just to shop, look at your fashion list and try to purchase things already on there. If you happen to find 3 fantastic party dresses, but your fashion list consists of a dress/skirt for work, boots, and a trench coat, take a good look and compare what you have in front of you to what is on your list. Maybe you can wear one of the dresses to work with tights and a blazer, but if a party dress, let alone 3 party dresses hasn’t popped into your head as a need/want, chances are you really don’t need to be spending the money on them.
Your fashion list is also a great way to keep track of your style, and what you like at the moment. If you see a great outfit on Pinterest or on a blog, write down the pieces to it. See what you already have, and if there is one key item which you could buy to recreate the look from your own closet. This will enable you to use what you have, purchase only key items, and keep track of looks that resonate with you. It will also keep you from forgetting that great outfit which stood out to you.
