How many times have you looked at your closet, decided that you have nothing to wear, and either gone shopping or made a beeline to your favorite go-to outfit?
It’s very common to revert to wearing the same few items of clothing over and over again, and forget about the rest of the items deep in your wardrobe. Instead of reverting to the same old outfits or going shopping for new ones, I’m sharing three reasons why you should go through your closet now. And when I say go through your closet, I mean your entire closet!
You can save money and find items you might have forgotten about by “shopping” in your closet
When I suggest going shopping in your own closet, what I’m really saying is to go through every item piece by piece to see what’s there. Many of us have clothing that we’ve forgotten about, so it’s a great way to change up your go-to outfits without actually investing more money into your wardrobe. Don’t just breeze through your closet and take note of what you have, actually take out each item to see what’s there. Often clothes can get hidden behind other pieces, causing us to forget about them.
While your style might have evolved over time, you (hopefully) purchased everything in your closet at one point because you liked it, so explore what’s there and see what you can do with it.
View it as an opportunity to clean things out
Going through your closet can be a pain, so kill two birds with one stone. Use it as an opportunity to take inventory of what you have, and try everything on to see what fits. If clothing doesn’t fit you right, get it out of your closet. All it will do is sit there and take up space. It’s important to dress your body properly to flatter your figure, and keeping clothing that doesn’t fit right or flatter you won’t serve you well.
Place the clothes you want to get rid of in a donation pile, or if you really want to keep them, place them in a vacuum storage bag to save on space.
Style things in a different way to change up the look and feel
I purchased this sleeveless trench (similar item here) a couple of years ago but never styled it as a dress until recently. The other day while I was going through my closet to take inventory, I realized that I could style the trench as a dress if I paired it with a slip underneath and a belt to give it shape. I tried on the newly styled look and it instantly felt new and fresh! All of the sudden this piece of clothing that has hung in my closet for years became something that I wanted to wear often.
When you have clothing that you don’t want to get rid of, but often don’t wear, take an objective look at it and assess what exactly you don’t like about it. Maybe what you don’t like can be fixed through proper styling. A good rule of thumb is that if something needs shape, try adding a belt or a structured jacket. This will help highlight and flatter your figure while adding the shape that the initial item is lacking.
If the item is too tight, there’s not much that you can do except for getting it tailored to better fit your body.
____________
When it comes to style, it’s easy to revert back to your comfort zone, but hopefully these three reasons why you should go through your closet now inspire you to take inventory of everything you have, wear the clothing you haven’t worn in a while, and style your favorite pieces in a different way to make them feel new and fresh.
Good luck!
