The truth about style is that it has to feel organic, and most importantly, it has to feel like you. While it’s important to dress appropriately for the occasion, the truth about style is that there are no rules as to what you should feel good in. You will (most likely) feel best in clothing that both flatters your body and highlights your personality, however no one can truly tell you what you should feel best in.
Figure out what inspires you
Feeling like you’re in a style rut? Make yourself an inspiration board. It might sound silly but this is a great way to let your creative juices flow and really hone in on what inspires you. You can make a physical board, or you can just head over to your trusty friend Pinterest to create some style inspiration. Are there any fashion looks that you love? Do you continually find yourself drawn towards a certain style, pattern, texture, or color? Add it to your board! This will give you an opportunity to physically look at all the things that inspire you and help you figure out what the base of your style really is. Your style should inspire you, and this is a great starting point!
Look at your daily routine and your life patterns
The truth about style is that your style should make you feel confident, however true style needs to be functional as well. If you love how something looks, but it’s not functional for you to wear on a daily basis, then you need to either figure out a way to make that style work for you, or be realistic in the fact that it’s probably not something you can implement into your wardrobe.
For instance, you may love how stilettos finish off a look, but if you don’t feel like you can walk around in them and take on your daily duties wearing them, they probably aren’t the best option for you. Instead, go with a block heel or wedge to give you the height you’re looking for while still optimizing comfort and function.
Find a few key pieces that you absolutely love, and integrate them into many different outfits
I have a Theory blazer that I found at a consignment store still with the tags on it, and it’s one of my favorite pieces I own. Part of it is the story behind it, but the perfectly tailored black blazer ties together so many different outfits, both for casual and more formal occasions.
Part of having authentic personal style is wearing pieces that you truly love, and pieces that make you feel good. Find a few key pieces such as the perfect blazer, little black dress, or heels that marry function and fashion to integrate throughout your wardrobe. If you have a few key pieces that are great, you’ll be able to wear them often, boosting your confidence and giving you an effortless way to look and feel put together.

The truth about style is that there is no right or wrong look for everyone. You have to go with your gut and go with what makes you feel good. While there are guidelines about what will flatter different body shapes best, go with what you feel best in, because if you feel good, your confidence will shine through, making you look as good as you feel.
