The Number One Most Versatile Item of Clothing You Should Own

Today I wanted to talk about the number one most versatile item of clothing you should own. Believe it or not, this goes for both women and men. If you look through my style posts over the years, you’ll see that I’m often in some form of a white blouse regardless if the look is casual or formal. A white blouse or shirt can easily be dressed up, dressed down, or layered to work for any situation you find yourself in. If you’re still not sold on the fact that you should own at least one white shirt, here are a few reasons why it’ll become one of your go-to wardrobe staples.

There is almost no situation where you can’t wear a white shirt

With the exception of going to a waterpark where you’ll get drenched, there is almost no situation where a white shirt isn’t appropriate for both women and men. You can easily layer a white shirt under a blazer or pair it with a pair of jeans for a simple and put together look. All in all, a white blouse will never look out of place. It’s a classic piece that will ensure that you’re appropriately dressed for any occasion.

Roll up the sleeves of a white button down and wear it open with a t-shirt underneath for a casual yet put together look, or tuck it in with a sweater or blazer for a more formal appearance. The versatility of this one item means that you can get away with fewer items of clothing while still maintaining a versatile wardrobe.

Side note** contrary to popular belief, white shirts are great for situations where you might spill because you can just bleach the whole thing to get rid of the stain. I’ve gotten red wine out of a white shirt, which is a lot easier than trying to clean a stain from a colored or patterned shirt.

Think of your white shirt as a blank canvas

One of the best parts about a white shirt or blouse is that it’s like a blank canvas. You can pair it with any color and it will work. Want to add in a pop of color to your look? Try pairing your white top with colored pants, a colored jacket, or even a colored scarf depending on your mood. The options are endless.

You can layer it to change up your look

One of my favorite ways to change up the look of a white blouse is to layer it under a sleeveless dress. This completely changes the look and feel of the top, and gives you another way to wear the same garment without appearing as though you repeatedly opt for the same outfit.

For both men and women, layering a vest over white shirt is another great option. This again changes up the look and feel without having to purchase something new.
