Rosh Hashana (Jewish new year) is this weekend, and it’s traditional to enjoy apples with honey to start a sweet new year. This spiced apple granola is a great way to mix things up to enjoy apples and honey in a different way. For this spiced apple granola recipe, I use freeze dried apples which add maximum apple flavor without the added moisture of fresh apples. I got my freeze dried apples from Trader Joes, but you can find them at a lot of supermarkets and online.
This recipe comes together quickly, is packed with flavor, and is a healthy snack or breakfast option. Plus, it’s gluten free, and if you swap the honey for maple syrup can be made vegan.
Spiced Apple Granola Ingredients:
- 2 cups rolled oats
- ½ cup hemp seeds
- ½ cup sliced almonds
- 1 bag (1.2 oz) freeze dried apples, chopped
- ¼ – ½ teaspoon cinnamon (if you like a good amount of spice, use ½ teaspoon)
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ cup coconut oil, melted and cooled slightly
- ¼ cup raw honey
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
To make the spiced apple granola, start by chopping up the freeze dried apples. I just roughly chop them until they are in small bite sized pieces. You can chop them as small or leave them as large as you’d like. Next, add the apples, oats, hemp seeds, almonds, salt, and cinnamon to a large mixing bowl. Note that you can adjust the cinnamon to your taste. If you like things on the spicier side, use ½ teaspoon. If you prefer the cinnamon to be more nuanced, use ¼ teaspoon. The safest bet is to start with ¼ teaspoon, taste the granola, then you can add the additional ¼ teaspoon if you’d like.
Add in the coconut oil and raw honey and mix so that all of the dry ingredients are combined and evenly coated with the honey and oil.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat (this is what I used) then spread the spiced apple granola mixture evenly in one layer.
Bake at 350 degrees for 12 – 15 minutes until the granola is fragrant and nicely toasted. Let the spiced apple granola cool before you break it up. This will help the granola clump up into little clusters.
Let the spiced apple granola cool completely, then store in an airtight container for about a week (if you don’t finish it by then).
Enjoy, and happy apple season!
