Today, I wanted to share my trick for simple layering: add a button down shirt. It’s an easy way to stay a little warmer while adding style and sophistication to your outfit. It’s been really chilly here, like 37 degree chilly. I know that’s not too cold for the rest of the world, but for southern California, it’s definitely winter weather, and even though I would love to spend all day snuggling in pajamas while watching holiday movies, I have to go to work. And let me tell you, my office is pretty darn chilly when I get there!
Through trial and tribulation, I’ve discovered that this trick is the best way to layer up while still staying office appropriate, stylish, and most importantly, warm! Today I got up for work, and it was one of those mornings where all I wanted to do was stay under the covers; that or bring a blanket to the office. Knowing that I didn’t actually want to look frumpy and cold, I picked out an outfit perfect to ward of the chill. One of my favorite tricks for layering is to wear a button down shirt under a dress or sweater. You add another layer to keep you warm, and you get the chic collared look!
Today I grabbed my sheer white button down blouse and my go-to black shift dress for a simple and stylish look. **SIDE NOTE: I love this dress, and wear it/use it for everything. It’s such a steal too! I decided to layer on a double chain necklace around the collar to add some more flare, and threw on my black tights and boots that I always gravitate towards in the winter. Another color dress or jumper would be really cute here too, maybe even in a plaid, but today I wanted to stick with the basics.
Layer on your go to winter coat, and if you’re somewhere really cold, a scarf and a hat, and you’ll be good to go! I use this layering trick with button downs for sweaters too. It’s the easiest way to make a sweater chic and more work appropriate. See my sweater styled with a collared shirt below:
There are many dress and sweater options with a collar built in, and those can be great when you don’t want to add more layers, but to save money and stay warm, I suggest shopping in your closet and using this budget friendly trick! So there you have it, my favorite tip for simple layering: add a button down shirt!
