Yes, you heard me correctly, and it is possible to wear leather at work. I think one of the most common misconceptions about office attire is that you are very limited to what you can wear appropriately. People seem to think that the classic suit, blazer, slacks, pencil skirt, and blouses/button downs are the only types of clothing around, and this is just not true.
You can absolutely be fashion forward and office appropriate at the same time, as long as you keep your surroundings in mind. One of my go to ways to mix things up with leather at the office is with a leather jacket. In this picture you’ll see I paired a classic pencil skirt, blouse, and pumps with one of my favorite cream colored leather jackets. Not only does it keep you super toasty and warm, but it also adds a bit of flare to an outfit where a blazer would be predictable.
Another great way to incorporate the material is with a leather pencil skirt or dress. These may seem a little out there, but when done right they are perfect choices for office apparel. The key to wearing a leather skirt or dress appropriately is the cut. Make sure the length is just above the knee, and if it’s a dress, make sure it is a well covered neckline. If the neckline is a little too low for comfort at the office, pair it with a basic blazer and scarf to cover up a bit.
The great thing about fashion today is that garments are made to be versatile, and with so many great options available, there is no reason to get stuck within the old school rules about office style. Take a step out of your comfort zone and try something new! As long as you style each piece correctly, you can indeed wear almost anything to work. Think about your office dress code, and make an informed decision about what works best for you. The easiest way to start is to have one item be your daring and out of comfort zone piece, toning it down with basics for the rest of your outfit.
What are your thoughts about office style? How far would you push the fashion boundaries while still staying office appropriate? #writestyles
Nice post! I agree. Leather (or faux leather) can totally be work appropriate when paired with nice classic pieces. I also like wearing leather bottoms with sheer/flowy tops and a structured blazer/top layer. 😉
