While it’s still in the triple digit temperatures here in Southern California we’re starting to see everything for fall in stores. Even though it seems like it’s eons away, the next season is right around the corner, so I wanted to talk about how to wear your maxi dress all year long, and why this is such a vital wardrobe staple.
The beauty of a maxi dress (shop the one I’m wearing here) is that it is simple, elegant, and effortlessly chic. It doesn’t get much easier than throwing on one item of clothing and going about your day. And while you may be able to forgo the jacket in the summer, this post is about how to wear your maxi dress all year long, so I’m going to share styling tips for all seasons.
Summer:
Can’t get any simpler than this! Throw on your maxi dress and wear it as it, or pair it with a belt and some simple jewelry. When it’s this hot out, don’t try to add too many accessories or you’ll end up weighing yourself down.
Note** if you are going to wear a maxi dress at the office, make sure it isn’t too revealing and that your bra straps are not showing so that you look polished and professional!
Fall:
When the leaves begin to change and the temperature starts to cool down a bit, this is the perfect time to break out a light jacket. Think about pairing your maxi dress with a short denim version like this, or with an anorak/utility jacket (like this) which seems to be all the rage for fall.
If you’re going to the office, stay away from denim unless it’s okay with your dress code, and try wearing it with a cute blazer to dress up your look. Blazers lined with a different color (like this one) make for great pops of color and cute cuffs when you roll them up.
This is where you can also start to wear your light and gauzy scarfs. You’ll probably be okay with sandals, but ballet flats are another great shoe option.
Winter:
While it doesn’t get as cold here in southern California, temperatures do drop, so this is where you’ll want to layer up. Try pairing your classic maxi dress with a fitted leather jacket, felt hat, and favorite boots. Since the dress is long, you can pair it with tall boots or booties, but just remember that you’ll only see the bottom of the shoe.
Cozy scarfs and long necklaces also work well here. This is the time of year for layering, so pack them on! You lose heat fastest through your limbs and your head, so keep that in mind when you’re getting dressed.
Spring:
Back to warmer weather, and much like fall, you can probably just get away with wearing a light jacket or cardigan with your maxi dress.
For a different look, throw on a long cardigan, and wear the belt over both the dress and sweater. This will keep you warm by still showing off your shape and making you look less boxy.
