How to Rock a Choker as an Adult

Does anyone else have major nostalgia seeing the rising popularity of the choker? A huge trend in the 90’s, I have a very distinct memory of wearing black overalls, a striped long sleeve shirt, and a choker to school and feeling like I was the coolest kid around. While that would still be considered fashionable today, I think it’s important to talk about how to rock a choker as an adult so it doesn’t appear as though you’re trying to relive your childhood.

While I loved my childhood and everything about the 90’s, I’m not running to relive my era of bad hair, braces, and baby fat. Thus, I’ve done my best to figure out how to rock a choker as an adult in a chic and sophisticated way.

Pay attention to material

One of the most popular choker styles when I was a kid was this plastic “tattoo” style. As an adult, look for more sophisticated materials such as velvet, satin, or leather to make this style appear more luxe. Remember that when you’re figuring out how to rock a choker as an adult, you don’t want to revert back to your childhood aesthetics.

Velvet, satin, and leather make chokers appear as more of an accessory than trying to look like body art, which is always a good thing.

Don’t fall for price traps

While there are some gorgeous high end chokers out there made from pretty chains, if you’re going for the satin or velvet look, don’t be fooled into purchasing a high priced item. Okay so honestly, $8 isn’t high priced, but the choker I’m wearing for this look is a piece of satin ribbon from Michaels Craft Store that totaled $3 for the whole role! That means you can buy chokers for you and all your girlfriends, and still have some ribbon leftover to wrap some gifts! Can’t beat that. Even with a low $8 price tag per choker, $3 for multiple chokers and gift wrap is a lot more economical. And as an adult, money always matters.

Style it correctly

When you’re looking at how to rock a choker as an adult, styling makes all the difference. Chokers can look chic and sophisticated, or they can easily take the turn to look trashy and childish. To ensure that you look the former and not the latter, make sure that you’re styling your choker with appropriate clothing. I.e. a neckline that doesn’t show too much cleavage, and better off, I love the look of a choker with a great jacket, (as seen in my pictures).

I’m also a big fan of layering chokers with dainty chain necklaces at different lengths. This choker has everything built into one easy piece, but you can also just layer what you already have in your closet.

While nostalgia is great and rocking an old style that’s back on trend is fun, it’s important to keep your look modern and fresh. Even if a style comes back, that doesn’t mean that you should be rocking the exact same look as you were two decades ago.

Wondering how to rock a choker as an adult? Opt for luxe fabrics, and style it in an age appropriate way. The 90’s were great, but there’s no need to relive what already happened. Happy shopping!
