How to Layer Jewelry Like a Pro

I love jewelry, which means that most of the time I can’t pick just one piece to wear, so I wanted to talk about how to layer jewelry like a pro. I find that a lot of people are intimidated by the fact of mixing and matching different pieces of jewelry, but it’s really easy and it’s hard to mess up!

Start with the basics

When you’re trying to layer jewelry like a pro, the key is starting with basics. Think of this as your base jewelry (the jewelry you always wear). For me, this consists of stud earrings, a simple rose gold necklace, and three small bangle bracelets that I almost never take off. Part of your base jewelry might be rings or a watch, but those are items I like to have off while typing on my computer all day.

When you figure out what your base jewelry is, it’s easy to build from there. Just take what you normally wear and add pieces to your look.

Figure out what works together

You can see in the picture that I often wear around five bracelets at once, but the reason I can do this is because they all work together. Some are bigger (in diameter) than others, so they sit farther up my arm, while the smaller diameter bangles stay right around my wrist. Five bracelets with the same dimeter wouldn’t work as well because they would all get stuck at one point and it wouldn’t be comfortable.

Mix and match and play around with your jewelry to see what works together and what doesn’t. You want to make sure that you’re combining pieces with different sizes and lengths so that they complement each other and don’t compete. For instance, if you’re layering necklaces, two necklaces that are the same length won’t work well because they will get tangled and one might fall behind the other. If you layer necklaces of different lengths, they will fall at different points on your neck without competing for space. This also greatly reduces chances of them tangling together.

Keep it simple

Layering jewelry can be fun and look great, but to truly master the layered look, you’ll want to keep things simple. Statement pieces are just that, a statement. They are meant to be worn alone. Layered jewelry is often a lot more delicate. Think of thin chains and pendants, along with thin bangle bracelets. The more delicate and simple each piece of jewelry is, the more layers you can add!
