Hot Outside, But Cold in Your Office Here’s How to Deal

When it’s hot outside but cold in your office, it’s often hard to dress in an accommodating way that doesn’t leave you shivering inside and sweltering when you walk out the door, but I’ve got some easy tips and tricks to ensure that you’re always at the perfect temp! According to the New York Times, office buildings set their thermostats based on the metabolic rate of a 40-year-old man in the 1960s, so it’s no surprise that you may be shivering daily. In the past 2 offices I’ve been at, this has been the case, so I developed some tricks to staying comfortable:

Always wear (or bring) some sort of jacket or blazer, even if you don’t think it’s necessary when leaving the house. I can’t tell you how many times I was tricked by the warm weather and was left trembling at my desk from the constant AC. A great item to keep on hand is a black blazer like this (link) because it will go with almost any outfit, and you can basically keep it in your car to throw on top of whatever you’re wearing.

Keep a blanket scarf at your desk. A blanket scarf or pashmina is a great option because you can keep different parts of your body warm. You can throw it around your neck, or throw it over your legs when wearing a dress or skirt. The beauty of using it to cover your legs is that people won’t be able to see it under your desk, so it’s like wearing a cozy little secret!

Dress in layers. As a child, my mother always made sure I had an undershirt on under my clothes, and it’s a trick I’ve continued to use throughout the years. Adding extra layers such as an undershirt will keep your core warm without adding much bulk. This is my absolute favorite one (link here) If you’re really freezing, think about throwing on a thin long sleeve shirt under your blouse and a blazer to keep you even toastier under that blowing AC.

Wear Closed Toe Shoes: It may be tempting to throw on those adorable sandals and wedges, but think twice before coming to a cold office in them. While it may not seem like a big deal, having exposed toes will make you lose a lot of excess heat. Pumps are always a great office appropriate closed toe shoe option that will also look great when you walk outside in the sunlight. While you can always opt for boots, if it is hot outside, they may look a bit misplaced.

So there you have it, those are my tips on how to deal (and dress) when it’s hot outside but cold in your office. Do you have any other tips that help you? Send them my way by commenting below or tagging your pictures with #WriteStyles so I can see!
