The holidays: the time of year when there is a constant flow of parties and a constant need for outfit ideas, thus I bring you the perfect holiday party outfit: the jumpsuit.
I don’t know if it is the ease of only putting on one piece, or the effortlessly chic aura they give off, but I am continually drawn to and slightly obsessed with jumpsuits.
That being said, loving how a jumpsuit looks in a magazine or on the mannequin doesn’t always correspond to how it looks or fits on your body, so finding the perfect jumpsuit can be a bit of a struggle. As always, your tailor is your best friend. When I found this jumpsuit the waist and pants fit, but the top section was all wrong, thankfully my miracle worker of a seamstress fixed it so it fits me like a glove. All problems solved! The key to finding the perfect fit on a jumpsuit is to fit it to the widest part of you and go from there. It is much easier to take something in than to let it out. For instance, if you have a larger bust, get the top portion to fit you and then have the waist and legs taken in, or if you’re like me, you’ll want the jumpsuit to fit your bottom half first, and then get everything else tailored.
So now that we’ve talked a bit about fit, let’s talk about styling and why the jumpsuit is a great holiday party (or any party for that matter) outfit option. First off, it is versatile. Here I’ve styles it very simply, wearing minimal jewelry and simple black pumps, but you can take this in a multitude of ways. Some styling options include:
- Try adding a statement necklace and a pop of color with your shoes and purse to make the jumpsuit stand out and give you the slight feel of color blocking.
- Add a fitted blazer or leather jacket to keep you warm and break up the piece a bit. Adding the jacket and even a scarf will draw attention away from the jumpsuit itself, so the jumpsuit acts as a blank canvas for your other pieces. NOTE: this trick will let you wear the jumpsuit to various parties while playing down the fact that you are in the same garment.
- If you’re feeling really daring, add a button down blouse under it for a cool layered look. You can go for something sleek, or for a balloon sleeve blouse [add link] to really amp up the high fashion look.
Secondly, the reason it is a great party outfit is that it is easy. Who wants to worry so much about their look that they forget to have fun? Not me! Once you get a great fitted jumpsuit, you don’t even have to think about it. It is there, in your closet, ready for some last minute holiday festivities!
And lastly, a jumpsuit is comfortable. The last thing you should be thinking about at a party is how uncomfortable you are, especially when there are yummy food and drinks around, and this alleviates that stress. Not only is a jumpsuit physically comfortable, but because it has built in structure and shape, it is figure flattering, which should be mentally comforting as well.
