I have a sweet tooth, but I’m always looking for ways to satisfy my sweet cravings in a more mindful way. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with a good old fashioned sweet treat, however I always like finding more nutritional ways to get my sweet fix, and this healthy red velvet hot cocoa is perfect for that! This healthy red velvet hot cocoa is super satisfying during these chilly winter days, and can act as a great afternoon pick-me-up, or as a sweet treat any time of day.
I’d be lying if I told you that it completely tastes like hot cocoa from your childhood because it doesn’t. It has a more nutty and earthy flavor from the almond milk, honey, and beet root powder, but it’s still really yummy! If you’re looking for a more classic flavor, just swap the almond milk for regular milk. (This would probably also be really good spiked with some kalua or Bailey’s!)
Note that this recipe makes one very large serving or two small servings. I usually go with two servings because it’s actually pretty filling from the almond milk, but it’s super healthy so go for the big serving if you feel like it!
Healthy Red Velvet Hot Cocoa
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or whatever kind of milk you prefer)
- 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons beet root powder (link here or you can find it at most Whole Foods locations)
- 1 ½ teaspoons raw honey
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
This recipe is so simple! Add all ingredients to a blender, then blend until smooth.
I used the milk steamer on my espresso machine to heat it up so it would get frothy and become Instagram worthy, however you could easily just heat up the healthy red velvet hot cocoa in the microwave or on the stove top.
Note*** if you really want Instagram worthy healthy red velvet hot cocoa, steam a bit of plain almond milk on the side to add to the top, then dust with some additional beet root powder for color. This is in no way necessary, but it sure does make for a pretty drink!
Enjoy!
