The Camel Overcoat

It’s kind of funny how this all started and escalated, but I saw some random picture on the internet of someone looking fabulous in a long camel overcoat, and I fell in love. I decided that I had to find one like that for myself, but it was a trickier task than it seemed. Not only am I extremely picky about color and fabric, (I wanted a slightly darker camel and something that would hold up and last the test of time) but I’m also not working with a huge budget here. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again, but coats really are worth the investment, however there is definitely a range where I’m comfortable, and then where prices get absurd. I am personally alright with spending up to a couple hundred dollars on a nice jacket because I know that the quality is usually higher, however I’m not made of money, and at this point in time cannot justify spending thousands of dollars on just one piece of clothing. No, I’m not kidding, there are plenty of jackets out there for that price, and I know this because I found a couple that I loved (but were obviously out of the question) when on my quest for my camel overcoat.

Okay, so after searching high and low, and looking for something that would fit my smaller frame, I came upon this jacket. I have to admit, I wasn’t totally sold on it from the image online, but after getting it and trying it on, I absolutely love it! It is warm, but not too huge and bulky, and because of the neutral color, can be worn with absolutely anything. I do have to tell you that since these pictures were taken, I did go and get the jacket tailored a bit in the back to give it a little more shape, but that wasn’t totally necessary, just a preference I have on how I wear my jackets. Because I’m so short, I take every opportunity to get clothing tailored so I don’t appear to be swimming in it. (Again, not totally necessary, but tailoring will bring a garment from looking great to looking like it was custom made for you)

Okay, so now onto the styling of this jacket. It’s pretty simple. It can be worn with anything! Well, almost. Please don’t go out in a clown suit and this jacket and say that I told you it’s okay, but in all sensible parameters, this jackets goes with a lot.

I chose to pair it with a striped button down top and sleek black pants. I do think that a patterned focal point is a great way to contrast the beauty of this simple jacket because it breaks up the outfit a bit, and contrast is always good to keep the look interesting.

Another suggestion I have is to stick to cleaner lines and silhouettes. Because this jacket is longer and isn’t a super fitted style, (even with my alterations) wearing clothes that are super bulky such as A-line or super flared out skirts will make your overall body shape appear bigger. Usually when you wear a piece of clothing with more volume, I suggest cinching the waist with a belt or wearing a short, fitted jacket. Because this jacket doesn’t provide much shape, it would simply enhance the voluminous appearance of bulky garments.

Think about trying sleek pants like I did, or a simple pencil skirt/dress as work options. I’m also super excited to pair this with my favorite jeans, flats, and cozy sweater! A cute beanie or Barret would also be great here.

So there you have it, this is how I found and styled my new favorite clothing item, the camel overcoat! Are you into this look? Show me how you style it with #writestyles
