Depending on if you live somewhere truly freezing, or somewhere relatively mild, winter is usually a loved or hated season. While it can feel like style goes out the window when it comes to staying warm, I’m sharing how to stay fashionable and warm. The key when figuring out how to stay fashionable and warm during winter is layering, and finding coats that have shape to them.
Layer, layer, layer:
Layering is one of the best ways to stay warm, but it also lends itself to fashion too. Try layering a collared blouse under your sweater for extra warmth and style. The collar gives a more sophisticated spin to a casual sweater, and the extra layer keeps your core warm, which is ideal to lock in the heat. Also throw on a camisole or undershirt for an extra layer.
A good camisole or undershirt won’t add much extra to your frame (appearance wise) but it will keep you super cozy. My favorite camisoles are soft and pretty inexpensive. Shop them here!
Find a coat that has shape, and flatters your body:
Even puffer coats can be purchased with shape now! Finding a coat with built in structure ensures that you’ll stay warm without looking like the Michelin man. The coat I’m wearing (pictured above) is a great example of a coat with structure, because it’s not only shaped, but it comes with a belt which further enhances your shape. Cinching at the waist is always flattering, and many thick wool coats have this built in, however if you want to create shape on a coat you already own, wear a belt over the coat. Just make sure that you use a belt that is big enough to go over your coat.
Embrace hats:
I’m a hat person, end of story. I love hats of all shapes and sizes, but it’s not only because of the fashion! Hats keep your head warm, which translates to the rest of your body. I love berets because they are versatile and loose enough that they cover my ears too. One of my all-time favorites is this cashmere version from Nordstrom. It’s a good price point and lasts a long time. I’ve had mine for years and it’s just as great as when I purchased it!
Hats come in all different shapes and sizes, and the key to embracing them is finding the style that works best for you. Go on a hat hunt and try on different options. If you search for it, you’ll almost surely be able to find a style that you love.
