How To Build a Versatile Wardrobe

There are so many trends in the fashion world that it can be hard to keep track. And while it may be tempting to go out and by the latest trend item, it’s much more beneficial to build a versatile wardrobe that passes the test of time. I’m one of those people that sees fashion as cyclical. When I look back at pictures of my mother, I see nuances of clothing I wear today, and see direct correlation between our styles and fashion choices. Yes, that may be because we’re related, but it is also because modern fashion inspiration is drawn from the past.

When you’re thinking about your style, answer the following questions:

  • What kind of clothing do you love/what are you drawn to?
  • Is there a shape or style that works best on your body?
  • What do you want people to see/think when they look at you?
  • What does your daily life/routine look like?

Each of these questions will help you learn something to help you figure out how to cultivate a versatile wardrobe that you’re proud of.

Shop Consciously

When going shopping, it is important to buy items that a) you truly love, and b) that will be useful. The key here is to have bits and pieces of trend or impractical items sprinkled in as you build a versatile wardrobe. Invest in timeless pieces like a fabulous jacket or a perfectly fitted blazer, or slacks that fit you like a glove. Items that you can repeatedly wear and style into different outfits are what will keep you going and let you build your own iconic style.

Make Sure To Think About Functionality

Maybe you want to portray yourself as polished and chic, and love the look of heels with a crisp shirt and blazer. It’s important to find what you like, however if your life and/or work has you running around, perhaps heels aren’t the best option to stock your closet with. You want to make sure that your clothing is functional and versatile. Think about what you’re going to be comfortable in, because if you don’t feel good in what you’re wearing, you probably won’t wear it much.

Why It’s Worth Investing in Versatility

Just the other day I got a compliment on a leather jacket I was wearing, and as I thanked her, I realized that I bought the jacket over eight years ago. I remember thinking that it was a total splurge, but I had fallen in love with the supple leather and quilting on the sleeves. Now, as I look back on the purchase and how much I’ve worn it over the years, I realize that it was totally worth the money and investment because it is a piece that I can keep, continue to wear, and remember a different time in my life. One of the beautiful things about a versatile wardrobe is that the clothing can bring you back to a different time. You may be wearing the same jacket from eight years ago, but chances are that you aren’t the same person. These items are what help you see your own growth and how far you’ve come.

_______________

Next time you’re debating spending money on that neon perforated jacket, think about how often you’ll wear it, and if it is a piece you could see yourself wearing a few years down the road. Piece by piece, take the time to invest, find clothing you love, and build a versatile wardrobe that passes the test of time. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
